So, where do we go? The future of animal ethics lies not in universal rights—which are philosophically neat but politically impossible—nor in weak welfare reforms that make us feel better while the slaughter continues. The interesting solution is : deliberately widening the circle of empathy one species at a time. Peter Singer argues for the capacity to suffer as the baseline. If a creature can suffer, it deserves moral consideration.
