This paper examines the intersection of console modding (specifically JTAG/RGH on Xbox 360) and downloadable content (DLC) for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag . While Ubisoft designed the game with live-service elements, storefronts, and online verification, JTAG/RGH modding enables offline access to exclusive DLC, bypassing paywalls and server shutdowns. We analyze three dimensions: (1) the technical exploit chain (reset glitch hack, hypervisor bypass), (2) the legal and ethical landscape under the DMCA and EULAs, and (3) the role of modding in preserving delisted DLC (e.g., “Aveline” mission, time-saver packs). Through case studies of community archives, we argue that JTAG/RGH serves a dual function: piracy enabler and last-resort preservation tool. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for legacy content access.
