Throughout the film, Antonio undergoes psychiatric treatment. The therapist strips away his defenses, forcing him to confront why he hits the woman he loves. Antonio admits that when he feels he is losing control over Pilar, violence is his way of regaining it. He creates a reality where Pilar is an object he owns, rather than a person with free will.
