But the genius of Season 3 is that the Mind Flayer uses Billy’s real memories against him: his abusive father, his absent mother, his guilt over leaving Eleven to die in the sauna. The finale flashback on the beach, where Billy sacrifices himself to save Eleven, is a tear-jerker. He whispers, "I'm sorry," and impales himself on the monster’s claw.
