Legend says that Empress Jingū erected the shrine to honor the Shinto deity Wakahirume-no-Mikoto (the Sun Goddess Amaterasu’s weaving maiden) after returning from a successful invasion of the Korean Peninsula. For over 1,800 years, Tsubaki Sannomiya has stood guard over the land, surviving wars, earthquakes, and urban development.
