Tsumugi means “to spin and weave,” but also, in an older reading, “to gather and return.” In 2004, I thought I was learning a craft. But Mrs. Ueda was teaching me something else: that a thing made slowly, imperfectly, by hand, carries the weight of every second spent on it.
